What I’m Reading – April of 2015

There are a number of things I read online each month but never really thought of sharing it until now. Instead of just keeping it all to myself I’m going to start a series of blog posts and share what I’m reading with you. […]

SEO Ranking Factors for 2014

Search Metrics has just released their study of search engine optimization ranking factors for Google for 2014. They examined 300,000 URLs that appear in the top search positions to see what properties each had. The results were compiled to see how these co-relate to the rankings in Google. How to avoid exact match domain penalties when doing SEO

Google has been making it more difficult for exact match domains to rank by decreasing the threshold of on-page over-optimization for these domains. It used to be really easy to get exact match domains to rank and our friends at “The Big G” figured out that people doing SEO were buying these domains and doing way too much optimization on-page. Basically, it made them an easy target. With the latest Panda update, they’ve made it even more difficult. Exact match domains still work. But, you need to make adjustments throughout your page and with off-site search engine optimization (link building) as the threshold of over-optimization is much lower. […]

Algorithm Changes We Wrongly Assumed Google Had Done to SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) can be a bit of a dark art as our friends at Google never really tell us what is in their algorithm. They like to drop vague hints as to how it determines where sites should be ranked for specific keywords but never really tell us. SEO companies, such as Coronation Internet Marketing, can guess using this info or use test sites in order to test to see what works and what doesn’t. We then like to use what we have discovered to help our clients and ourselves. […]

SEO is Not Dead and Why Your Business Needs It

Many pundits will have you believe that SEO (search engine optimization) is dead. The main reason a lot of them figure it’s dead is becuase the strategies used as recent as a year ago are not working any more. 2013 saw Google make massive changes in their algorithm to target, what they call, “web spam”. You can’t do things like build a massive amount of automated links to your site (you can still do this for your pages on Facebook, and Twitter or videos on YouTube, but that’s a whole other blog post), repeat your keywords in your site content over and over again and build links to your site emphasizing your keyword as your anchor text. A lot of websites got slapped around by Google because of the fact that they were using these tactics. […]

Anchor text balance in SEO and how to fix it

After the Google Penguin updates of 2013, we gained a number of new SEO clients that were penalized due to over-optimized anchor text. For those of you who many not know, anchor text is the text on a web page that links to another page or site. It’s usually underlined, but not always. For example, if we linked to Google we might make the link say: Google www.google.com Search Engine […]

Want to dominate SEO? Think long-tail keywords

A lot of people still make the mistake of optimizing for a specific keyword or a short keyword phrase when doing SEO. After Google’s Hummingbird update last September, their algorithm is looking for content about topics instead of individual keywords. If you pick a short tail keyword that has hundreds of thousands of searches per month, you will be competing against large companies that have huge authority which will likely take you months or years (if you are lucky) to get to the first page of search results. The article linked below talks about some of the strategies you can employ to start strategizing for long-tail keywords instead of short-tail. […]

Develop personality instead of SEO?

Yeah, that will work. It always amazes me when journalists write about SEO and they have no clue what they are talking about. The author of the article linked and quoted below believes that personality is more important than keywords. The key lies in what she said: keywords. You can’t just optimize a site using keyword and meta tags. It takes far more than that including compelling content, rich media, social media activity and other sites linking to you. […]

Google may be changing their ways in regards to “Not provided” search phrases

Us SEO’s have been left frustrated by Google hiding which search phrases are being used to find our client’s websites. They say they did this to protect the privacy of those people logged into Google accounts who are using Google to search. Last September, Google announced that they will be hiding all searches, which would make it even more difficult for SEO companies like ours. But, now it looks like they may be rethinking that. Is Google About To Make A U-Turn On “Not Provided”? […]
